Offered from private collection: A regal greyhound in a landscape by noted British animal artist George Paice (1854 – 1925), signed lr and dated \"02\" (1902). This painting measures16 x 22 inches, framed: 20 x 26 inches. Colors vibrant, especially beautiful blue hues in the background, some lifting of varnish at lower edge, 3\" scratch in paint under dog, some inpainting in dog face, please see photos of canvas and also of verso. Appears to be a replacement frame. Appears to have been relined, but overall good condition consistent with age.
Provenance: Doyle Dogs in Art Feb. 2003George Paice was fairly prolific during his lifetime and made a very good living from private commission work. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the Royal Society of British Artists. He received much commission work to paint horses and dogs and was considered very competent in depicting those subjects. One of his patrons was Lady Margaret Cecil. He continued to paint up until his death. He maintained a consistently fine quality, later work sometimes more characterized by a freer hand, a departure from the more usual tight and finished technique as in this depiction. Other examples of his work also depict greyhounds, and works by the artist have been offered at major sale houses worldwide, with paintings of dogs rather than horses generally commanding higher prices.
