This fine Gullah basket is coiled from southern sweetgrass and pine needles wrapped with palmetto strips. After the round inner basketwas completed, 3 rows of coilingwere added which meander above and below the original bowl in graceful, equidistant curves. The ones below the basket act as feet and elevate the basket.

You can tell this basketwas made byan experienced weaver by the way the stitches line up in straight lines, the neat additions of palmetto stripsand the very even weaving.

The basket measures 6 3/4\" in diameter and is 5 1/2\" deep (including the \"ears\")

It is signed by the maker, Beverly Grant,on the base (see photos).

Prior to coming to Charleston, I have never heard or read about sweetgrass baskets until I met Beverly Grant at the Old City Market. Mrs. Grant was one among many sweetgrass basket vendors in the market. As a child she learned the art of making sweetgrass baskets from her mother and has been weaving baskets for the last 45 years.
