HAL FORREST(b. 1895) attended the Art Institute of Chicago before joining the Aviation Section of the Signal Corps during WWI (incidentally, at age 17, Forrest became the youngest scoutmaster in the U.S.). He drew the first aviation comic strip,Artie the Ace, before developing theTailspin Tommystrip in 1928. It became enormously popular with radio shows and movies based on the character, before being canceled in 1942.

This is theoriginal artto strip number 3255 which was syndicated onOct. 10, 1938. It is in great condition with some minor staining in the first panel. This art has been professionally cleanedwith museum grade archival materials. Professional cleaning not only removes stains, which diminishes the visual appeal, but also removes the impurities which had greatly increased the acids in the paper. By doing so, the acid content is reset to zero and the paper fibers regain their strength and suppleness. A large remnant of the art extender for the European market is still on top of the margin area to the left of the first panel.
