Up for sale with is a very fine quality and very handsome Large 19th Century Italian Grand Tour Green Serpentine Marble Carving of a Dog. I am told this is the Dog of Alcibiades which is a very famous 2nd A.D. Roman Bronze and Marble Sculptures like this were sold in the Victorian times to wealthy tourists who were doing the \"Grand Tour\" of Europe or the World. The Sculpture is exceedingly well carved of a dark green variegated Marble and appears to have been completely carved from one block of Marble. The Dog is in excellent condition for being around 150 years old with one small fissure or crack on his left leg right above his paw that appears to be quite stable plus some minor chipping to one ear as seen. The Carved Sculpture is a nice large size measuring10-1/4 inches long by5-1/2 inches wide across the base and sitting10-1/2 inches tall overall. The sculpture is also quite heavy weighingapprox 10pounds. I doubt you will find many original 19th Century Carved Marble Grand Tour Dogs like this up for sale, let alone selling without reserve !
