FANTASTIC, ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN DIARY OF REV. GAITHER P. WARFIELD, RETIRED GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE UNITED METHODIST COMMITTEE FOR OVERSEAS RELIEF, AND A FORMER METHODIST MISSIONARY, AND PRISONER OF WAR. WRITTEN WHEN HE WAS 14 YEARS OLD, ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND, 1910. August 19, 1986, Rev. Gaither P. Warfield, 90, retired general secretary of the United Methodist Committee for Overseas Relief and a former Methodist missionary in Poland, died of leukemia on August 16, at his home in Rockville, MD. Mr. Warfield was with the Committee for Overseas Relief for 20 years before his retirement in 1966, and in that capacity he traveled all over the world. He also was former vice chairman of Church World Service, an interfaith agency that provides relief to refugees, and he was on the administrative committee of the division of interchurch aid, refugee and world service of the World Council of Churches.He was born in Rockville, Maryland. graduated from Dickinson College and earned his degree in divinity at Union Theological Seminary. From 1924 until 1941 he was a missionary in Poland.(Additional images after listing.)

In September, 1939, when Poland was invaded by Germany and then Russia, Mr. Warfield was taken prisoner by the Russians, then turned over to the German occupation forces in Poland in a prisoner exchange. He was released late in 1939 but then arrested shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and held in an internment camp in Bavaria. In 1942 he returned to the United States as part of an exchange of German nationals living in the United States for American nationals in Germany. Upon his return here, Mr. Warfield settled in Rockville and went to work for the New York-based Board of Missions of the Methodist Church. In that assignment he made speaking tours about the United States. (Obituary taken from the Washington Post.)

Gaither Warfield at 14 years of age has handwritten entries in this diary that depict a young man who had an older brother Roy; a loving mother and father that were very active in the church and community; numerous friends; played tennis, baseball, loved to ice skate, went fishing at Great Falls; attended Rockville Academy; recorded the weather and how many chicken eggs he was able to collect every day from their hen house; went to the Belasco and Columbia theaters to the movies with his friends; did very well in school (recorded his test scores); and was an active, all-around young fourteen year old who enjoyed life to the fullest. He looked up to his brother Roy, and refers to him quite often in this diary. His friends included Baumey, George Peters, Elgar Smith, Edward, Wilhelm, Mollie, etc. Loved his Aunt Lena, Aunt Kate, Aunt Honey, Aunt Lizette, husband Jack and 5 year old daughter Margaret, who he really enjoyed as she was fun to entertain.

Handwritten entries include; \"Feb. 12, The Woodly Inn burned down today, I could see the flames from the road; Today, February 13 is my birthday and mother gave me a gun metal watch; Feb. 14, Mother and dad went to Valentine\'s Day dinner at the Baptist church and dad sang; Feb. 15, Catherine Vernon in Miss Rice\'s room fainted and had a convulsion. She almost died and had to go home; Maris Talbot\'s house burned to the ground today and they could not save a thing; I sold 5 dozen eggs today! Roy went skating with Miss Maude (his schoolteacher) at the Potomac Basin and then to Chevy Chase; I had a hard day at school but did well in the Latin test; March 3, Oh yesterday old man Thompson was found dead; March 9, George and myself stopped Mr. Black\'s horses today and he was drunk; March 18, I went to the Indian Show; Dad went to Redding and he went on an automobile tour with Mr. Lancombe; Mother went to Baltimore for three days for the State Federation Conference; Mother taught school today for Miss Rice who is out for a few days; Mother taught the last day at Montrose.\"

\"We went up to visit Rev. W. D. Keene, he has some good books; Went to church and Sunday school today, Rev. Coe preached; Dad went to visit the Baptist Church; The Choates are moving away; Our team played Sherwood High School (and he records numerous game scores.) May 2, They dedicated the Zion Church today, we went to see that; May 9, Went to the Barnum & Bailey Circus; May 18, The man is coming and we are going to get electric lights; Had a telephone installed and Miss Maude is calling everyone; May 22, Got our new Sunday School Pins today. The sixth Sunday School World Convention is going on in Washington, D.C.; June 7, Played some baseball with some Soldiers from Troop C, 15th Regiment; June 15, Miss Lilly Anderson married Dr. Lindsey of Washington, and I had fun throwing corn; Dad and Roy went to Laytonsville about some business; June 23, Carried posters for the Minstrel Show. Went to movie picture show at the Masonic Hall. Mother, Lizette and Margaret came home from Laytonsville today, June 26, Mother had 15 people to dinner; etc. His friends and acquaintances include Mr. Lucket, Mr. Milan, Miss Lynnewood, Mr. Fulton, Mr. R.E.L. Smith, Teachers - Mrs. Ward - Miss Ford - Miss Maude - Mr. Whitford. Charles Pettyman, Paul Hoskinson, Mary Gittens, George Field, Mr. Kilner, etc. Places he mentioned or visited included Baltimore, Bethesda, Great Falls, Sandy Springs, Gaithersburg, etc.

Condition: Fully bound in red leather, this diary is in very good condition, covers every day from January 1st, 1910 through his last entry on July 18, 1910, and there are a few notations on the last few pages. Basically it entails 7 months of Gaither Warfield\'s life in 1910, at the age of 14, and is a very worthy acquisition indeed. Measures approx. 3 x 5 inches.
