19th Century Antique Wooden Personal Trunk Box Belonging to Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, Stenciled on the top is “Hon. H. Hamlin, Bangor, Maine.” Found in Bangor, Maine, Fine.
Hannibal Hamlin (August 27, 1809 - July 4, 1891) was the 15th Vice President of the United States (1861-1865), serving under President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. Born in Paris, Maine, he died in Bangor, Maine. This shipping trunk measures 16.75” wide x 34” long x 18” tall, being a Pine Box that was originally owned Hannibal Hamlin. Stenciled on the top is “Hon. H. Hamlin, Bangor, Maine.” This box must have been used for shipping Hamlin’s personal belongings as it also black stenciled “By Eastern Express” on the right side edge of its wooden lid. This travel box’s original use is somewhat speculative; however, it would be a wonderful storage box for your Civil War Era, Political and Abraham Lincoln memorabilia. (Shipping cost will be figured upon its weight and size.) It is also perfectly ready to place on display.
Prior to his election as Vice President under Lincoln in 1860, Hamlin served in the United States Senate, the House of Representatives, and, briefly, as the 26th Governor of Maine.
