The team was composed of thin Englishman Stan Laurel (1890–1965) and heavyset American Oliver Hardy (1892–1957). They became well known during the late 1920s through the mid-1940s for their slapstick comedy, with Laurel playing the clumsy and childlike friend of the pompous Hardy. The duo\'s signature tune is known variously as \"The Cuckoo Song\", \"Ku-Ku\", or \"The Dance of the Cuckoos\". It was played over the opening credits of their films and has become as emblematic of the duo as their bowler hats.

**Celluloid, generally considered the first thermoplastic, was first created as Parkesine in 1856 and as Xylonite in 1869, before being registered as Celluloid in 1870. Celluloid is easily molded and shaped, and it was first widely used as an ivory replacement. By the 1920\'s, it was widely replaced in jewelry making by the much more stable Bakelite, Galaith and Catalin plastics. Why? . . . Celluloid was highly flameable! Developed in the 1930s, the clear acrylic plastic branded as Lucite became a wildly popular material for costume jewelry starting in the 1950s as it was less expensive to produce than Bakelite, Galalith, and Catalin--it made these earlier jewelry plastics obsolete.

Here is a Vintage Circa 1930\'s collectible early Celluloid plastic lot of 2 LAUREL & HARDY brooches/pins. Of course, Laurel and Hardy are the genius comedy duo icons from the early 20th century. In case you don\'t remember, Laurel was the taller lengthier gentleman and Hardy was the shorter heavier gentleman. :) This cute dimensional pair of Laurel & Hardy brooches are off-white celluloid plastic with hand-painted coloring in gray and black--and Hardy has a red bow tie. They have a glossy finish. The facial expressions and details are AWESOME! Hardy measures approximately 2 1/8\" x 1 3/8\" and weighs 0.3 oz., and Laurel measures 2 1/8\" x 1 1/8 and weighs 0.2 oz. They are unsigned and have glued on pins with open C-type clasps in perfect working condition. These pins have been well-cared for--there is very slight surface wear/paint loss (see all photos). They are definitely in EXCELLENT, NEAR-MINT vintage condition for their age! These are rare and especially hard to find as a pair (Laurel is harder to find than Hardy)--and would be a fantastic addition to a vintage plastic or any vintage jewelry collection! SUPER DUPER CUTE!
