Provenance: Japan.
Age: Meiji Period (C.1868 - 1912).
Size: The piece measures a massive 56.5cm in height (22 1/4\") x 34cmin width x 34cm in depth.
Artist/signature: Unmarked however almost certainly the work of Ryosai studios.
Condition: The vase is in excellent condition overall. No chips or cracks. The birds head appears to have been touched up, as has the base.
Comments: A fine, rare and large Meiji Japanese Sumida Gawa studio ware vase. The vase (or Umbrella stand) features an impressive Egret Bird standing beside various Bamboo stems and stalks. The Bamboo is covered in thick glazes with impressive tonal colours and effects, as often found with most Sumida Gawa wares. It very difficult to find piece of this size, especially in such fine shape. Almost certainly produced for a world exposition fair.
