HUGE ANTIQUE NAVAJO RUG Diamond Dazzler MOTIFS Old Cochineal Red Wearing Blanket:

One of the most amazing antique Navajo rugs in my collection. This is more than 100 years old. All natural wool. It is priceless.

I love the grandness of its size. This fine antique Navajo rug is extra large,Chief\'s blanketsize. And since this was hand loomed, outdoors, the larger the size the longer it took an expert weaver to make. Measures69 inches long by59 inches wide. A large veritable masterpiece. This piecetook an expert weavera year or twoto complete.

My family owned a trading post in Tuba City, Arizona, in the late 1890\'s. They would later hold the first horse show in Prescott, AZ. While the trading post was sold in 1902, my family did acquire some great rugsfrom the nearbyreservation. They traded with Mr. Hubble, whose influence on this rug is apparent.

This has been appraised at $3,500.00. It has lazy lines in the interior, as well as a selvage line border that is mostly in tact. Certainly this is more than 100 years old.

So in addition to being an antique, and an authentic Navajo weaving, you\'ve got the extra large size factor, which increases its worth. Another element that increases its worth is the deep true red Cochineal red color natural wool. This cochineal red color, in my opinion, doubles the value of the piece. The red is so rich, it just makes the piece. The cochineal red color is also seen in most museum quality Chief\'s blankets from the transitional period, and it\'s prized by collectors because the red never fades, even after a century the red is still vibrant.

Another thing that adds value to this weaving are the diamond dazzler motifs. You see the red and blacktriangles that come together to form diamonds. The diamond pattern is difficult to weave,Hubble encouraged tribal elders to weave more sophisticated designs, and this is the result. There areseveral diamond within diamondshapes, at eachcorner of the rug, in red with the natural grey brown wool in small diamond shape, then the larger red diamonds. The Navajos considered theseshapes to bring good luck. I love the exquisite pattern in this piece.

Handsome colors in this piece. Natural off white, charcoal grey, true red, brownish cream natural variegated wool, and black (actually dark charcoal brown but it reads black from a distance). The weaving is fine, tight, as opposed to coarse. The wool is very soft, good quality churro. This is pliable, folds well, with some substance an weight to it.

This is a showpiece, a conversation piece, something you hang on the wall in a favorite room to add that Southwestern warmstyle. It\'s vibrant, bold, an awesome piece. Andit\'s in good condition for it\'s age because there are no major holes in the middle, no chunks taken out of it, no tears. No major soiling or stains either. The woolis thick, hand carded. There is one spot near the end that I noticed, and one repaired section. But overall this is top quality masterpiece. It\'s extra large grand size was the kind that collectors like William Randolph Hearst preferred to have in their collection, this piece is among the higher end of Navajo weavings due to its extra large size, and the fact that it\'s an authentic antique (with lazy lines clearly present). The weaving lays flat, it\'s heavy. Obviously the work of a master weaver. Note there are also a few small breaks in the selvage, no tassles, but overall in good shape for its age.

An oldlate 19th Century Authentic Native American Indian or First Nation artifact.There\'s no bleed or anything as this rug has not been cleaned. This is unaltered.A rare find.

Both sides have also been photographed, it\'s reversible. An awesome, authentic Native American Indian made textile.

This would look fabulous hung lengthwise above a couch in your living room. It will add a Western flair to any room. The style is earthy, natural, a fantastic Navajo heirloom. This was kept tucked away in the attic for decades, which may have something to do with why there\'s very little wear. I just love it and hope you do too. It\'s a rare beauty. Each piece has a bit of the personality of the weaver in it. An incredible work of art that will continue to appreciate with time.
