Description

Original Batik African wall hanging. 74" long and 43" wide. The long edges, the top and the bottom, are finished as they are bias edges. The sides are unfinished. The fabric has been wax coated as in the batik art. The fabric is medium to heavy grade. Genuine East African batik art, probably the only one of its kind. Deep beautiful colors. The piece has been folded and may have fold marks. The pictures were taken of the piece laying lengthwise on a queen-size bed. Pictures were taken of both sides. There are a few spots, shown in the last two pictures. There may be other spots that I missed. Very large, very rare piece. Would look amazing framed. I purchased this in 2005 but it is probably much older than that.

I do donate some proceeds to families I know in Mombasa who live in dirt floor mud brick houses; they will be very excited when this sells :).

Batik is a technique ofwax-resistdyeingapplied to whole cloth, or cloth made using this technique. Batik is made either by drawing dots and lines of the resist with a spouted tool called acantingalso spelled tjanting, or by printing the resist with a copper stamp called acapalso spelled tjap). The applied wax resists dyes and therefore allows the artisan to color selectively by soaking the cloth in one color, removing the wax with boiling water, and repeating if multiple colors are desired.
