Some Information on Meerschaum:

Meerschaum is a rare,white, porous, brittle rock that has been mined and hand-carved into intricate smoking pipes, decorative figures often into shapes like mermaids or sea captains. The name meerschaum is from the German word meaning \"sea foam.\"

Before the mineral can be used for a pipe, nodules are scraped off to create a smooth surface. Then it is dried in the sun or a special kiln and smoothed once again. Finally, it is polished with wax to create a smooth, shiny surface. Master artisans then carve it and sand it once again. It is heated in wax to protect the finish and polished.

Meerschaum doesn\'t conduct heat, making it ideal for pipe designs. Unlike briar pipes, they don\'t burn and can be smoked multiple times per day. The pipe absorbs nicotine and tar from the burning Tobacco, and the meerschaum changes in color to tan or brown.The color change adds to the value.They make wonderful collections either used or unused displayed on a shelf or in a cabinet.

Most Meerchaum pipes sale from Turkey are considered higher quality than pipes from anywhere else in the world. They have a better color and age better than Meerschaum from other areas.Meerschaum is also used for cigar and cigarette holders.
