Danish silversmith Hugo Grun who was active between 1918 and 1937 was part of the Scandinavian Arts and Crafts movement of Skonwirke (Beautiful work).
His brooches of this period show the typical handmade designs that bridge the gap between Art Nouveau and Modernist.
This example is no exception. The finish reflects the handmadeartisan-shipof the period.
The curving lines and smooth metal sheen of the face of the central image within its cartouche of silver are iconic.
The brooch is marked 830S for the silver quality (83% silver). This quality of silver was used in the earlier pieces that were produced by the members of the movement.
The maker is identified by the initials H. Gr. (Hugo Grun of Copenhagen).
From 1937 to the early 80s the firm became Hugo Grun & Co.
This brooch appears to be an early model. Placing it\'s creation in the 1950s is my way of being circumspect about the time of origin.
It weighs 4.6 grams and is 4.5 x 1.5 cm.
