Wonderful antique handwritten 5-year diary of Miss Elinor D. Mapes, daughter of Cream of Wheat cereal founder, Emery Mapes. Diary kept from January 1, 1908 to April 29, 1912. Elinor, born May 23, 1878 was 29 years old when she began writing in the diary. She lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota with her family including younger sister, Alta. Her brother, Frank was married with his own family. She also spent much time with relatives in Pasadena, California and in the family\'s summer home in Lake Minnetonka, as recorded in her diary. Her diary is a documentation of her daily life in high society; social calls, luncheons, dinners, books she read, home life, French and art classes she attended, things she shopped for, religious/political meetings she attended, important people of the day including Roosevelt, and her fascination with automobiles, bumpy roads, punctures and air machines.
Red leather bound 5-year diary. Binding is worn around edges on front/back covers and top of spine. No loose pages. Clean and odor free. Acquired at local estate sale in box of old books within the last year.5 3/4\" Long x 4 1/2\" Wide x 1 1/8\" Thick
Elinor wrote in her diary faithfully everyday, then stopped writing abruptly on April 30, 1912, which inspired this Seller to find out why, and to thus identify the name behind the initials \"E.D.M.\" on the front cover, as her name is not recorded anywhere in the diary. She writes fondly though, of her younger sister, Alta who married a man named Frank on September 6, 1911, in the family summer home in Lake Minnetonka, as recorded in the diary. Research of local online archived newspapers on/around day of marriage resulted in finding wedding announcement for Alta and Frank wherein her sister Elinor\'s name is mentioned, the summer home in Lake Minnetonka, and revealing Alta and Elinor as the daughters of Emery C. Mapes. Further research revealed that Elinor Mapes married a Baptist minister, E.V. Pierce, and had one daughter, Lydia. Elinor died Feb. 20, 1970 at the age of 92. Her father, Emery, became wealthy as the founder of the CREAM OF WHEAT cereal company and built a mansion on Lake of the Isles, Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1915. This mansion is still today one of the most impressive mansions in the area. Elinor\'s handwriting, though written over 100 years ago, remains vibrant and alive. Read through her days, experience life in the early 1900s, and spend some time with the young socialite,Miss Elinor D. Mapes.
