Handwritten Diarykept by a young woman
from 1957 - 1960
I do not know the name of the woman that kept the diary,
and I do not know where she lived.I purchased it from an estate sale in upstate New York
(Albany area).I did not read the diary in its entirety but I did scan the entries
and do some speed reading.Most of the entries are in ink and the writing is legible.There is an entry pretty much every day for the four years that the diary was kept. In addition to the daily entries, there are pages of records which were recorded to keep track of the sale of gravel and hay -
which is apparently how this family made most of their income,
in addition to odd jobs and the diary keeper cut peoples hair in her home.She also recorded friends, family and neighbors deaths
(with first and last names)
and babies that were born and who they were born to.Many of her daily entries also provide first and last names of the people in her life.If geneology is your thing you could probably do some research to determine where the diary keeper lived - and perhaps who she was.Nice look at every day life and the local economy in the late 1950s.I can not show you all of the entries - but here are a few of them to give you an idea of what you are offerding on

A cold day. 15 below. Osborne has to work today to catch up. The Besse's did not come down. Mr. & Mrs. Coomles here also Hallen + Kenneth Foss.This is Saturday the 2nd of Frebruary. The Shorts from Granville are here. Mabel called. Mr Fred Short gave us 4 rabbits. Mr. Games + Sturella here. Bruce Morris is here.Weds. April 17, 1957

Mr. Abbot + Mr. Smith got a hair cut. Elmig got a load of rocks. Betty came up with Christmas gifts. Osborne came up with a boxful of gifts. The Clarks are looking for Aunt Carrie.March 2, 1958 Sunday. Osborne Grace and Elliot here. Elliot went up on the roof and shoveled snow off the roof. I gave him a dollar. Gertrude George and James here. She brought cake and cookies. Hellen and Mabel here.August 20 Em and Emerson got 2 loads of wood. Hellen called. We canned 7 quarts of beans.Weds 24 of September Wesley Seammons died today heart trouble.May 10 1959 Mother's Day. Grace sent me a nice card and a nice powder box. Jouff Arthur Gogg and son Raymond called. Maynard Pelky and Erma and her mother called. Mr. Walbur here. Fire started on the Grant Road and made for the woods near us. There is a crowd watching it tonight. Osborne was here. Osborne called the Fire Department. Mr and Mrs Coombs here.December 25 Osborne called. We had a nice chicken dinner. Mabel came up she left us a basket of food - cheese, grapes, oranges, sweet potatoes and ginger ale.March 21, 1960 Mr. Moulton and Mrs. McLellun here. They brought me all kinds of candy and cookies and oranges and 4 cans of soup. And Osborne came and brought all kinds of food.
