hammered copper bowl by the Bauhaus designer Hans Przyrembel, Germany, c.1935

The bowl is hand hammered and executed in polished and partially burnishedcopper. The bowl is elevated on a ring stand.

It is markedwith his usual \'Hand Arbeit\' (handmade) stamp on the underside plus the designer\'s initials \'HP\' and a \'B\'.

The bowl section measuresabout 170 mm in diameter and the ring foot is about 82 mm in diameter. It stands at about 80 mm in height. Condition: Excellent, with only minor, surface signs of age and expected minorpatination to the metal in places. There are no deep scratches, dents, signs ofrestoration or other significant defects. As member of the Bauhaus Dessau metalwork department, Przyrembel (1900-1945)worked in close collaboration with Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Christian Dell, WilhelmWagenfeld and Marianne Brandt, with whom he developed a famous counter-weightedpendant lamp.

Afterleaving the Bauhaus he set up his own metal workshop in Leipzig, creatingpieces of hollow ware that were explicitly hand-crafted – his ‘Hand Arbeit’ signaturemarked a conceptual departure from the industrial design emphasis of theBauhaus.

He wascalled up to fight in the World War II and died as a prisoner of war in 1945.References:

A similar liddedbowl – with the same burnished finish and ring base - is held in the collectionof the Bröhan Museum of Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Functionalism, in Berlin. Itis illustrated and described in the museum\'s catalogue, Modern Art ofMetalwork, on page 259. The ‘Hand-Arbeit’ stamp is also shown.

There arefurther similar examples of Przyrembel\'s work illustrated in the Bauhausarchive exhibition catalogue Die Metallwerkstatt am Bauhaus (The BauhausMetal Workshop), Bauhaus-Archiv Museum, Berlin, 1992.
