Harold Arthur Cooper Bird-Wilson (1919-2000). Known throughout his career as "Birdy", he was an Air Vice-Marshall in the Royal Air Force, which he had joined in 1937. He fought through the Battle of France, and the Battle of Britain, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was shot down in September, 1940 by Major Adolph Galland, bailing out with severe burns. During much of the war he fought flying a US plane, the P-51 Mustang. He would go on to be awarded the Distinguished Service Order, The Czech Medal of Merit, and the Dutch DFC. By the time of his retirement in 1974 he had flown more than 213 different types of airplanes, including an airship and an autogiro. In 1978 he would fly the F-15 Eagle jet fighter. Although never officially classified as an Air Ace his final tally was three planes destroyed, a share in the destruction of six others, three probable destroyed, three damaged, and one destroyed on the ground.
