Harold Evans Hartney [1888 1947]was an Canadian born World WarIace fighter pilot with seven [7] confirmed aerial victories. On October 28, 1914, Hartney enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and shipped out to England in May of 1915. While in England he crossed paths with fellow Canadian Billy Bishop and with Bishop\'s urging Hartney entered the Royal Flying Corps on October 21, 1915. On July 1, 1916, during the beginning of the Somme Offensive Hartney earned his first aerial victory and would be credited with a total of seven aerial victories while assigned to the RFC NO. 20 Squadron,the U.S27th Aero Squadron and theU.S1st Pursuit Group of which he served as a commanderin both units.Harold Hartney ended the war as a Lieutenant Colonel and was awarded the American Distinguished Service Cross, French Legion d\'Honneur, Croix de Guerre, and theItalian Medal for Military Valor. Harold Hartney published his autobiography titled \'\'Up And At Em\'\'in 1940,and continued towork in the aviation field until his death in 1947.Listed for sale is a [TLS] typed letter signed by Harold Evans Hartneyon the letterhead of Hthe Civil Aeronautics Authority, Washington, D.C. and dated May 29, 1940. The letter is signed \'\'H. E. Hartney\'\'in black fountain pen above his typed name. The letter measures 8.50 x10.50 inches, it has expected mail folds and a trivial toning otherwiseit is in fine condition.
