HENRY LEE Known as Light-Horse Harry Lee - 1756-1818 American soldier and politician, born in Prince William County, Virginia. Brilliant Cavalry commander in Revolutionary War, especially known for capture of Fort at Paulus Hook, New Jersey (Aug. 19, 1779) and for operations covering Greene\'s retreat across North Carolina to Virginia (1781). Member, Virginia legislature (1785-88, 1789-91) and Continental Congress (1785-88). Governor of Virginia (1792-95); commanded troops that suppressed Whiskey Rebellion in Pennsylvania (1794). Member, U.S. House of Representatives (1799-1801). In his eulogy of Washington (1799) occurred the famous words, \"First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.\" Robert Edward Lee (q.v.) was his son, Fitzhugh Lee (q.v.) his grandson.
