This is an antique kerosene lantern marked, \"Hibbard Spencer Bartlett & Co. Chicago OVB No. 2\" on the tank. (\"OVB\" stands for \"Our Very Best\").This metal and glass lantern measures 18 1/2\" tall with the handle in the up position...15 1/2\" tall not counting the wire handle. The width is 8\". The tank base is 6 3/4\" diameter. The glass globe appears to be the original and measures 4 1/2\" tall x 4\" diameter top (3 1/2\" diameter base end) and is 5\" diameter at middle. There is a functional wick adjustment knob and a functional lever to raise globe. The tank is good but I have not tried to fill with fuel as the fuel screw cap is on tight and I don\'t want to mess it up. The wire handle does not bend over all the way so I am packing in taller box with it in upright position. It does bend a little but not all the way to bottom. May be original to lantern, not sure. The Hibbard Spencer Bartlett & Co. was aleading Chicago based hardware company started in 1865. The last partner to join was Bartlett (1882). So this lantern dated from 1882-1932.The company eventually became True Value Hardware.See my store for other interesting lanterns and primitives.
