MUSEUM PIECE! RARE & HISTORIC SOLID 10K GOLD MEDAL. FIRST FOOTBALL LEAGUE CHAMPIONS OF CANADA 1913. NORWOOD WANDERERS F.C. St. BONIFACE, MANITOBA.
The 1913 Connaught Cup was the inaugural edition of the Canadian National Challenge Cup, one of the oldest soccer tournaments in Canada and the first National Championship. It was won by Norwood Wanderers of St. Boniface, Manitoba. Current editions of the tournament feature a representative side from each provincial association and a final match; in 1913 the competition was played in a four-team format (under the old system, a win was worth 2 points and a draw worth 1).
The four teams who contested the Championship were Fort William C.P.R. representing New Ontario (Northern Ontario), Toronto Old Country representing Ontario, Lachine of Montreal representing Quebec and Norwood Wanderers of St. Boniface representing Manitoba. Included in thepackage are some pages of notes describing the competition in detail and the final League Table.
The medal was won by B. Mayson who played in all 3 games for Norwood Wanderers (details of each game included in the package).
Manitobs Sports Hall Of Fame: The 1913 & 1914 Norwood Wanderers football teams were inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall Of Fame in 2004 and details are included with the package. The medal winner, B. Mayson was included and is shown on the Hall of Fame photo. The package includes a photo reprint of the Hall of Fame 1913 team and I have highlighted B. Mayson.
Weight: 12.6 gm. Diameter: 30 mm. As the medal was produced in Canada there is no Hall Mark but it is stamped 10k for 10 ct gold and the Maker\'s Mark is Bailey.
Summary: As can be seen from the photos this is a very rare item which should really belong in a museum. There will not have been more than 15 of these medals issued to players of Norwood Wanderers for winning the first ever Canadian Football Championship so they are very rare indeed. It is likely to be of interest to collectors of early Canadian soccer/football medals but also to collectors of historic football medals generally. Good luck!
