Up for sale is a complete six volume set of the first English-language edition ofHistory of the Jews. It was printed over the course of several years, with the first being published between 1891-1898 and consist of six volumes, with the sixth serving as an index, and also containing a memoir of the author written by Dr. Phillip Bloch. The index version also has a pocket in the back where, after approximately one-hundred and seventeen years, four small maps were present, and appeared to have never been unfolded. They are maps of 1.) Semitic World 2.) Palestine at the Time of the Judges 3.) Palestine at the time of Herod and 4.) Jewish-Mahometan World.
These books, being over a hundred years old, are survivors,and, like all survivors, they have sustained damage with age. Their spines are faded, and are dirty at their tops (pictured). One of the books has a blemished cover, several have scratching, and water marks. One book (also pictured) has come loose from its spine, and another has an end leaf loose.The books also have foxing. No annotations or other marks were noted.
They were published by TheJewishPublication Society of America, and were written by Professor Heinrich Graetz (October 31, 1817-September 7, 1891). Professor Graetz was among the first historians to write a comprehensive history of the Jewish people from a Jewish perspective. History of the Jews is considered his magnum opus. He was granted the title of Honorary Professor by the University of Breslau in 1869, and his work became very popular and influential in his time.
