Wow! It\'s a great treat to find a piece by Chalmers Day whose renown as a Hopi artist is legendary. He studied with Preston Monongye and then worked for him and is a highly regarded silversmith with numerous prizes and museum placements. His work is remarkable. This piece is signed with his cloud hallmark which he began to use in 1982 and it\'s a beautiful bolo utilizing the overlay technique for which this artist is famous. He is considered one of the most important overlay artists in all Hopi history. He has won numerous awards and has been featured in many exhibitions and of course is discussed in the books. He\'s included in more than one book, and he is a museumquality artist.

This beautiful bolo is large at3\" x 2 1/8\" and it has substantial weight. The tie with tips end to end measure about 39\" and the classic Hopi tips measure 2-1/2\". One tip has a small ding.It\'s in superb vintage wearable and collectible condition. It is correctly hallmarked but not signed for silver content though it tests as sterling silver. The work is so crisp and clean and perfect you feel you could cut yourself on it. Chalmers specializes in very detailed and sophisticated designs in overlay and the quality of his artistry is exceptional. He is recognized as one of the greatest overlay jewelers in all history.

Great images on this bolo, with the large central parrot, a Macaw probably traded with Mexico or mesoAmerica, the four dots for the four sacred directions, prayer feathers and belt, (a sash is used in the gourd ceremony for example, but there\'s also a Navajo tie for creating the traditional bun on men and woman that is similar in appearance), The gourd rattle is used by several groups in ceremonies, such as the Peyote Ceremony and parrot feathers are used for the peyote ceremony fans, however the gourd rattles used by the Hopi dancers are larger and often painted, while not painted in the Peyote ceremonies, so many of these symbols have multiple meanings. There is also a pot and other images, executed with hischaracteristic skill, wonderful detailing and texturing. The images are specific to Hopi ceremonials and are sacred images although there are also images likely personal to the person for whom it was made. The anchor, for example, is a common symbol of strength and stability, and also related to the US Navy. The anchor holds down the map of North America, suggesting the strength of North America. Over all, it is a masterpiece, appropriate for the best collections. As Hopi art it cannot be surpassed.
