LEHMAN, Irving George (Russian/American, 1900-1983): Carnival Series Abstraction with Panorama of Abstract Figures, 1959, oil/masonite,24 x 48inches, signed in paint script \"Lehman\" lower right, dated in chalk (likely by the artist\'s wife Martha Lehman in Lehman\'s studio during the 1980\'s), affixed with inventory label number P-11 by Executor\'s agent\'s assistantcirca 1990 and affixed with remnants of a circa 2000-2004 local Florida exhibition price tag of $ 1,100.00 verso. Float mounted on rear support stretchers to be exhibited unframed.

Note: Lehman executed a series of 24 x 48 inch colorful, painterly, highly abstracted figural compositions in the late 1950\'s with similar formats of a crowd of stylized figures in the middle ground. A work from the series, reported in \"Art & sale\" circa 1990, was entitled \"Carnival\".

Provenance:

This work was acquired from an heir of one of Lehman\'s relatives who lived and worked in the Greater New York area.

Condition:

Quite sound unretouched original estate condition; plenty of even surface dirt; scattered minor imprefections; scattered adhesions of bits of cardboard and canvas from estate storage unframed; a couple of stray light surface linear rubs; no craquelure save for possibly at a couple of the impastoed flourishes; spots, spatters and scumbles that are likely mostly original to the gestural composition; staggered small edge imperfections that appear to be chips related to original backing support strip application; tiny staggered finishing nails line front edge that have been painted over - typical of Mid-Century Modern art that was conceived and created to be exhibited unframed, floated or with Minimalist strip moldings; one length of original backing support strip is absent and another is chipped but still attached by an original finishing nail; small losses to panel corners; major Lehman needing some surface and edge attention.

This item will beapproximately50x26 x4 inches when packed in a custom-fitted closely-sized narrow tolerance masonite-sided padded sleeve that will be fairly heavy but will fall under the over 108 inches length+girth shipping surcharge for all major carriers (it would cost significantly more in postage to ship a lighter weight all-cardboard/bubble/styrofoam package of a larger dimension). Item must have a tracking number, be declared as merchandise and shipped with purchase price as declared value. All items insured by our choice of either the carrier or by our own policy.

Biography:

LEHMAN, Irving George (Russian / American 1900-1983)

Painter, sculptor, printmaker and mixed media artist.

Came to New York from Russia as a young man and had studios in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Studied at Cooper Union and National Academy of Design.

One-man shows of both painting and sculpture at ACA Galleries in early 1930’s.

Worked as a WPA (Works Progress Administration) artist during the Depression.

Member of American Art Congress, worked near Woodstock and in Columbia County, NY and visited Rockport, MA & Mexico.

Subjects include Brooklyn Navy Yard, Coney Island, Central Park, Greenwich Village, Camp Lexington in the Catskills and Jewish themes, as well as both Social Realist and Constructivist influenced figures.

Lehman exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago ( AIC ), Brooklyn Museum, National Academy of Design ( NAD ), Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts ( PAFA ) Museum of Fine Arts, Bezalel, Israel as well as in Paris, France, Japan and elsewhere.

His oeuvre includes periods of considerable Constructivist, Ecole de Paris, Social Realist, Modernist, Abstract Expressionist, Regionalist, Judaic and Russian interest.

Lehman signed in both cursive and printed letters throughout his career.

The artist’s date of death is variously recorded as 1981, 1982 & 1983 (the correct date is ‘83).

There are several recognized Lehman estate stamps including \"Red Rock Studio,\" a signature stamp and \"Estate of\" (as 1900-1982 as well as 1900-1983) as after the death of his wife (artist Martha Lehman) his art was dispersed to 11 heirs through numerous exhibitions and sales in Manhattan, upstate N.Y., New England, Florida and Canada during the 1990’s.

He is listed in the major sale databases, Davenport’s, Mallett’s, Who Was Who in American Art and numerous other publications.
