19th Century Portrait of a Solicitor, oil on canvas
An impressive very large 19th century three-quarter length portrait of a solicitor. The sitter is Peter Joseph Karl Küchen (1800-1882) and has been depicted in black robes with long white falling necktie. He is holding a book in his hand and there are legal documents on a table beside. Painted large scale this fine portrait would have hung on a large wall and was intended to impress. A possible exhibition entry. The fluid handling shows all the vigour and style of a good artist as does the flesh colouring, and the excellent depiction of character.
The folds in the drapery on the shoulder are exemplary and the the hand has been very well crafted and is very detailed showing fine translucent skin. The folded legal document is 3D like and also extremely well painted. The artist was clearly versed in the oil technique and excelled in this art form.
This is a very fine example. Presented in an excellent condition swept frame. Due to the huge size this item may require extra dispatch / shipping time than our usual.
