Offered by Over The BlueHorizon is a superb pictorial book recently obtained in Tokyo -- “KAWANISHIN1K1/N1K2-J”, Number 304 of the well-regarded Model Art Special Series.

This tightly focused,vintage (1987) publication features the KAWANISHI N1K family of ImperialJapanese Navy (IN) fighters which began with the Kawanishi N1K1 Kyofu REXfloatplane fighter. The REX floatplane was originally designed to supportforward offensive operations at the edges of the expanding Japanese empirewhere no airstrips were available but by the time it became operationally availablein 1943, its original role was already outdated as Japan had already shifted tothe defensive. Its performance, however, was promising enough to redesignit as an upgraded, land-based version redesignated as the N1K1-J Shiden GEORGE.Although performance was significantly improved, it suffered engine andlanding gear problems, both of which were improved in the follow-on N1K2-Jwhich lowered the position of the wing from its mid-fuselage location whichsimplified the landing gear and lightened the aircraft. In this lastconfiguration, the N1K2-J Shiden-kai GEORGE was considered by its pilots andAllied opponents as being one of the finest land-based aircraft flown by theJapanese in WWII. Although considered the equal of the F6F Hellcat, F4U Corsair,and P-51 Mustang, the overall Japanese war situation including low productionnumbers and poorly trained IJN pilots did little to alter the eventual outcomeof the war.

This 156-page, 7.25 x10.25 inch softcover with dustjacket includes many line-drawings of all threemajor configurations of this fighter series with period photographs, detaildrawings, color chips, a multiple-page 1/48 scale set of drawings, and 6 pagesof color. Text is in Japanese but the level of visual detail is outstandingand anyone with a working knowledge of IJN aircraft will find this book to benot only useful but inspiring.
