IJN KAWANISHI N1K2-J GEORGE SHIDEN KAI Aero Detail 26 Superb Japanese Pictorial:

Offered by Over The Blue Horizon and recently obtained in Tokyo is a superb pictorial: “Kawanishi N1K2-J ‘George’ Shiden-Kai, Aero Detail 26\" from the very well-respected Aero Detail Line of books.

The key word here is DETAIL because that’s what this reference series is all about -- an exceptional combination of color, large-format photographs of aircraft that survived the war; nice period photographs of the aircraft from the WWII and immediate post-WWII periods; drawings of aircraft components such canopies, instruments, engines; clear, useful line drawing; and well-done color profiles. And although this is a Japanese book, there are extensive English-language captions – here’s an example of English text from this book: “A group of Shiden Model 21s of the 343rd Kokutai, 301st Hikotai preparing to leave Matsuyama in Ehime Prefecture on a flight to Kagoshima to join in the fighting around Okinawa on April 10, 1945. The plane marked ‘343-A 15’ in the foreground is that of the Kikotai’s commanding officer, Capt. Kanno, hence the two yellow fuselage stripes. This aircraft has the larger vertical stabilizer seen on aircraft through the 100th production example. The markings inside the ‘hinomaru’ rising sun were used for identification purposes during training, but many examples were seen bearing them through the end of the war. Kanno was one of the 343rd’s aces, but he was killed in aerial combat on August 1st, just days before the war’s end.” These superb English-language captions clearly help make this book absolutely perfect for the military historian and modeler alike.

The Imperial Japanese Navy\'s George is unique in that it was derived from an advanced float-plane fighter design, but in its late-war land-based configuration, was considered by both its pilots and opponents to be one of the better land-based fighters flown by the Japanese during World War II. It possessed a heavy armament and, unusual for a Japanese fighter, could absorb considerable battle damage. Despite such ability, it was produced too late and in insufficient numbers to affect the outcome of the war.

This 72-page, 10.25 x 10 inch softcover with dustjacket was published by Aero Detail, Tokyo, Japan in 2000 and offers superb close-up, detailed photographs of four surviving Georges that were brought back to the United States at the end of WWII for evaluation, and especially the two Georges at the Champlin Air Museum and the U.S. Air Force History Museum.
