Most of the stone articles stamped on one or another of their metal parts bear the mark of a Fabergé master. This does not mean that they were actually made by the master himself, but that he supervised their manufacture and assembly.

All materials, like the diamonds, the gold and the hardstones,are guranteed to be as-is. The collar isn\'t fitted well on the dog.

THE STORY BEHIND FABERGÉ\'S HARDSTONE ART

The Russian hardstone-carving trade, centred on Ekaterinenburg, enjoyed a period of great brilliance during the 19 th century, as did those of Germany and Italy. Not long after 1884 Fabergé, always on the lookout for new modes of expression, established links with Karl Woerffel’s workshop on the Obvodny Canal in St. Petersburg; later that workshop became part of the firm. From 1900 onwards, probably under the management of the German Alexander Meier, this workshop played an increasingly important role. This was where the gem-carvers Kremlev, Derbyshev, and Svetchnikov produced their flowers, animals, and human figures. Fabergéalso commissioned hardstone objects (mostly in nephrite) from the Imperial Hardstone Workshops in the town of Peterhof. This is proved by the marks on the maple-wood cases for the items in question. The man responsible for selecting the gems and hardstones was Faberge’s second son, Agathon, who was the firm’s expert on precious and semiprecious stones. It was this Agathon who, shortly after 1918, was commissioned by the Soviet government to catalogue the Russian crown jewels.
