AMuseum Quality C19th Tekke Turkoman Silver gold Horse Bridle Jewelry

ARare Central Asian Halter

On offer is another museum quality and highly collectible antique Turkoman / Turkmen gilded silver horse Jewelry / trapping / belt, dating to mid 19th century. This outstanding example is a bridle or halter (head piece worn over the horse\'s head and mouth and has a tightening strap - see published photo of Linden Museum Example). It is attributed to the Tekke / Teke tribe of Central Asian Turkomans and is easily one of the finest examples out there. The main part consists of four rows of high grade interlocking gilded silver plaques that are mounted on thick leather base. At the centre is a large archaic gilded silver pendant with beautiful intricate designs and an oval carnelian inset. This section is ended with arrow shaped endings where on each end the design varies (such variation is a sign of excellence in almost all Turkoman arts). The remaining part that would go over the face and around the mouth of the horse is made up of similar silver plaques with the joints finished with goldappliqué on silverand carnelian inset pendants and finished with a single arrow shape with protective symbols. The quality of the work is magnificent and majestic.

The Turkoman people had an obsession with displaying their riches not just by the Jewelry they themselves wore but also by decorating their horses with these fantastic silver and gilded silver Jewelry. But of course being so expensive such pieces were predominantly only for the nobility, the rich and the upper class. This is perhaps why such horse decorations are extremely rare to find and often demand high prices. This example is as good as they came and it was a halter or bridle worn over the head of horse. The condition is very good for its age and compared to the relative top examples out there in museums or published. It has a lovely patina and an aura to it that later reproduction examples one sees fail to capture (See photos). A truly collectible gem offered at very reasonable price.

HISTORY:

\"The Turkmen were pastoral nomads who lived in encampments, raised livestock, bred horses. In order to ensure year-round green pastures for their animals, the tribes moved two or three times a year. While not merchants themselves, the Turkmen were in constant contact with urban populations, and were often involved with providing transport and security for long-distance caravan trade.

Although nominally Sunni Muslim, the Turkmen kept many of their pre-Islamic customs and beliefs, which were often embodied in the jewelry they made and wore. Turkmen silver jewelry carried deep symbolic meanings and often marked an individual\'s passage from one stage of life to another. From a very early age, a woman started wearing jewelry whose shapes and materials were believed to ensure her ability to bear healthy children later in life. The amount of embellishments a girl wore increased as she approached marriageable age. Once she had had her first children, and her fertility had been established, the amount of jewelry she received and wore decreased. In addition, silver jewelry believed to ward off evil and illness was worn by men, women, and especially by children.

Jewelry was a significant financial investment, as it was handcrafted from precious materials. There were cases when, in times of dire need, a woman would part with her jewelry in order to help the survival of the tribe. Significant in size and weight, Turkmen jewelry objects were made of silver, decorated with semi-precious stones, and sometimes gilded for an added color effect and value.\" MET. MUSEUM, NY.

Jewelry was also important for the Turkoman men. Professor Johannes Kalter best describes this in his book Arts and Crafts of Turkestan \"The Turkestan man\'s need for Jewellery and display was expressed in the use of richly ornamented bridles and saddlery.\" (SEE THE LAST PHOTO ON THIS LISTING from that book).

Horse Jewelry is easily the coveted pieces of all Turkoman Jewelry.
