ARare and Large Central Asian Turkmen Bridal Jewelry

On offer is a museum quality collectible antique Turkoman / Turkmen silver necklace with gold gilding and carnelian insets, dating to the mid 19th century. This magnificent piece of Jewelry is known as Bukav (also written as Bokav) and it was made by the Tekke tribe. Such large and dominant necklace was one of the centre piece Jewelry worn by the bride on her wedding day. It would be one of the most loved possessions of the bride and perhaps this explains their rarity. This example on offer is nothing short of majestic and the quality of the work is by far superior than most examples. Firstly the main pendant part of the necklace is made up of the upper body section with fantastic cut out and gold design work and rich oval carnelian stones. Then five moveable parts dangle from this all cut and designed to compliment the overall classical Bukav shape. The two side parts with fantastic S pattern cut outs. Again this part also have carnelian insets. Then the pendant is finished with a fantastic and well positioned tassels (some with globular end and the rest arrow shape). Where one would expect a chain, the old and classic Turkoman Bukav used a different manner to hang a necklace around the neck. It was sheet of silver and gold that would hook on the large pendant and comfortably rest on the neck of the bride as seen on this example. Unlike lesser examples, the neck part on this have beautiful archaic bird motifs with oval carnelian. The silver, the gold, the 22 carnelian stones varying in size, the patterns, the cut outs and the overall shape create a powerful visual effect is like a unique archaic ethnographic art.

This is a top example that can match most published pieces as well as museum examples (see last image from a slightly younger example published on page 139 of Old Silver Jewellery of The Turkoman by Dieter and Reinhold Schletzer book). The condition is very good. It has natural age patina and an aura to it that later reproductions fail to capture. It can be worn as well as put on display.

SIZE: Pendant = 24cm (9.5\") x 22cm (8.5\"). Tassels = 10cm (4\"). Neck part = 19cm x 15cm (7.5\" x 5\").

MATERIAL: Gold on silver sterling with class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; vertical-align: top;\">\"The Turkmen were pastoral nomads who lived in encampments, raised livestock, bred horses. In order to ensure year-round green pastures for their animals, the tribes moved two or three times a year. While not merchants themselves, the Turkmen were in constant contact with urban populations, and were often involved with providing transport and security for long-distance caravan trade.

Although nominally Sunni Muslim, the Turkmen kept many of their pre-Islamic customs and beliefs, which were often embodied in the jewelry they made and wore. Turkmen silver jewelry carried deep symbolic meanings and often marked an individual\'s passage from one stage of life to another. From a very early age, a woman started wearing jewelry whose shapes and materials were believed to ensure her ability to bear healthy children later in life. The amount of embellishments a girl wore increased as she approached marriageable age. Once she had had her first children, and her fertility had been established, the amount of jewelry she received and wore decreased. In addition, silver jewelry believed to ward off evil and illness was worn by men, women, and especially by children.

Jewelry was a significant financial investment, as it was handcrafted from precious materials. There were cases when, in times of dire need, a woman would part with her jewelry in order to help the survival of the tribe. Significant in size and weight, Turkmen jewelry objects were made of silver, decorated with semi-precious stones, and sometimes gilded for an added color effect and value.\" MET. MUSEUM, NY.
