IDED AMERICAN NAVAL CUTLASS, FRIGATE WARREN1779 & PRIVATEER MINERVA, 1781.

This fairly made American naval cutlass was used by Lieutenant James Babcock when he seRved on the American Contennental frigate Warren from July 3, 1779 to August 15, 1779 He served under the Warren’s second captain, Captain Dudley Saltonstall (& was a relative of Captain Saltonstall’s wife Frances).He then served with Captain Saltonstall on the American privateer Minerva, a 16 gun brig in 1781.

It is 34 ½” overall length with a 28 7/8” x 1 1/8” double edged blade, circular iron guard with a single arm rivited to the bottom of the guard & peaned to the bach of the blade at the end of a 5” round wood grip. It is in good condition with the blade having light to light/medium pitting & has a dark brown patina, the guard has light pits, still retains a little of the origonal black paint & thye wood grip is in good condition without any cracks or rot. See George Neumann’s very fine book Swords & Blades of the American Revolution, page 189, figure 382S for details of a cutlass like this one. It comes with a very detailed family letter.
