Russian silversmith Ivan Saltykov is famous for his wonderful, richly decorated enameled silverware. Already around 1600 BC, enamel was known in Egypt and it was particularly popular and widely manufactured in the Middle Ages. When enameling, a colored glass paste is applied to the metal and surrounded by metal. The metal can be gold, silver, copper or brass. Thereby the glass can be applied with a brush or cast into corresponding indentations (pits) in the metal; by heating glass and metal are fused. Tea caddy and sugar box are both of cubic form and have domed lids, the surfaces are enameled all over with floral and foliate motifs.

Condition: Tea caddy and sugar box are in a very good, age related condition with minimal signs of age and wear. The base of the tea caddy displays some smaller dents. The gilt is partially slightly rubbed. The dimensions of the sugar box measure 9.7 x 8.2 x 8.2 cm, the dimensions of the tea caddy are 13 x 8.2 x 8.2 cm. The total weight measures c. 886 g
