1896 Russian Imperial Nicholas II Coronation cup, so called \"Khodynka Cup of Sorrow\".

This ceramic on copper beaker depicting Nicholas and Alexandra Romanov\'s ciphers under the imperial crown and coronation date of 1896, and Russian Imperial eagle in Pan-Slavic design cartouches of a rust-colored and pale blue strapwork design below a gilt borderand gilt rim.

Transfer enameled metal beaker made as a souvenir of the 1896 coronation ofImperial RussiaÂ’\'s last monarchs, Czar Nicholai II and CzaritzaAlexandra Feodorovna. One side of the beaker features the Imperialdoubled-headed eagle and the reverse shows the Imperial cipher. The remainder of the body is decoratedin polychrome with traditional Russian strap work with gilt highlights.


The Cup of Sorrows or Khodynka Cup was produced to commemorate the coronationof Tsar Nicholai II on May 18 1896. The cup was to be distributed to waitingcrowds at Khodinka Field the following day. However a rumour of a shortage ofthe cups lead to a mass panic and surge amongst the crowd which resulted in asignificant loss of lives. The incident was thought at the time to be a badomen for the future of the reign - an estimation that ultimately provedcorrect.
