IMPORTANT 1781-1819 SHIPS LOG MILITIA JOURNAL GRAND MANAN NB w SHIP DRAWINGS ETC:
$1303.00

I will be listing some great Antique Ephemera Items from an old West Roxbury, MA estate filled with many generations of untouched family ephemera and items. Here is a Wonderful and IMPORTANT EARLY SHIP\'S LOG AND GRAND MANAN, NEW BRUNSWICK MILITIA JOURNAL MANUSCRIPT BOOK of the First Settler to White Head Island in Grand Manan, New Brunswick, CAPT. WILLIAM FRANKLAND (b.1764 Whitby, England- d.1840 White Head, Grand Manan, New Brunswick). The entries by Capt. William Frankland seem to date between the years 1781 to 1819. In addition, there are a group of wonderful later c.1870\'s Folk Art Children\'s Ship Drawings drawn by his descendants on some of the empty pages between the manuscript sections which I might guess were drawn by William Frankland\'s great-grandchildren (most drawings are identified and or dated by the artists with Frankland names as well). The vellum-bound journal book is very full from beginning to end with handwritten pages, many in fancy, elaborate calligraphy by William Frankland and contains a great variety of subjects and sections from different time periods including handwritten copies by Capt. Frankland of some interesting early Grand Manan Militia Drafts, Detailed Musters, Discipline Case against Soldier records, etc.. The first half of the Journal is filled with 100 pages of advanced maritime navigational and mathematical excercises in elaborate calligraphic writing with many navigational exercise drawings by William Frankland with dates of 1781-1783 on them when Frankland was a younger man of 17-19 years of age and probably are excercises working as a ship\'s apprentice in some capacity at that time. These section includes headed navigational topics such as \"Navigation, Plain Sailing\", \"Traveres Sailing\". \"Mercator Sailing by Projection\". Towards the back of the book are Two 1784 Ship\'s Logs for two voyages written by William Frankland in 1784. The First is \"A JOURNAL OF A VOYAGE BY (W.F. initials) GOD\'S PROMISSION IN THE CHANGEABLE, FROM LONDON TOWARDS RIGO. CAPTON WILLIAM BARKER COMMANDOR. BEGUN WEDNESDAY MAY 5TH, 1784\". Log is 6 pages in length with voyage ending on May 17. After that is another ship\'s log \"A JOURNAL OF A VOYAGE BY W.F. IN THE GOOD SHIP GEORGE. GEORGE FITHIE MASTER. COMMENCING NOV. 16TH, 1784.\". This log is 17 pages in length documenting the voyage with log ending on Dec.24. Mixed into the second half section of the journal are the approx. 29 pages of CAPT. WILLIAM FRANKLAND\'s GRAND MANAN MILITIA RECORDS along with Miscellaneous land and legal cases. Frankland was captain of the Militia. The Grand Manan Militia records date from 1805-1819 which include lists of the Volunteers, a list of the July 13, 1812 Drafted persons, a more detailed list of Militia members from 1819, copies of Militia orders with April 5, 1805 the earliest, several pages of an 1806 discipline case involving Private Richard Ron and his being fined for being absent from a muster, etc.. According to the 1819 muster roll, the ages of the members in militia ranged from 16 years old to 57 years old. In addition to the militia records, there are also approx. 12 pages of earlier 1795-1796 Ledger pages of Capt. Frankland while he lived in St. Andrews, Scotland. Most look to be nautical related, along with several 1797 handwritten ship crew wage receipts paid by Capt. Frankland to crewmembers on a voyage on the schooner \"Jane\". Some receipts look to be signed by the payees. I did not research any of these names. William Frankland was also the County Magistrate on Grand Manan. There is an interesting page of record concerning a 1814 case of David Gilles of Grand Manan who sold his portion of the shipwrecked \"prize Schooner to his Majastys Sloop of War, \"Rifleman\" with cargo that he and Sylvanus Drinkwater found on Grand Manan. There is the bottom half (the top half of page cut out) of a copy of a possibly important land grant request by William Frankland, c.Early-1800s, for a parcel of land \"..N.B. from Point P--? to the west end at Wite Head..\". Mixed into the second half of the Journal-Book on the unused pages between the sections are SIX NICE FOLK ART PENCIL DRAWINGS OF SHIPS added 70 or so years after William Frankland\'s writing. The first is a drawing of the ship \"Bessie\" with American Flag which reads across bottom \"Drawn by Wm. L. Frankland. Dec, 24, 1878\" (great-grandson of William?). The second is a drawing of a sloop whose name I can\'t decifer. The third is a nice drawing of the ship \"Alabama. ENG\" with American Flag. Written beside ship is \"McCloughlin & Frankland Master workmen built in 1877\". The fourth is a drawing of the \"Mauo\" with American Flags at top of masts which has written beside it \"Built by Frank\" and has the name \"A.B. Frankland. Jan.16, 1881\" written on the backside. The fifth is a very folky and charming drawing of a small steam vessel named \"Nellie. Calais. Maine\" with Captain at the wheel and 42-star Flag in front and bird sitting on top of cabin. Along the rear Flagpole of boat is written \"Drawn by Frank McCloughlin\". The Sixth is a drawing of the ship \"Josephine\" with American Flags. There is a title page to a third ship\'s log for voyage on the ship \"George\" in 1785 like the second earlier log, but the next 7 or 8 leaves are cutout from book and missing after this title page for some reason. Other interesting entries in book include a half page (bottom half cut off) of business having to do with \"Wm. & George Burton, Charleston, S. Carolina per Brig Carolina. Capt. Grant, London...\" whose brother Capt. Isaac Burton died and letter copy has something pertaining to his estate as a result. The final leaf in the book is an interesting c.Late-18thC manuscript page which has something to do with the particulars of the will of \"Mr. Samuel Troutback, Late Madras Merchant\" (d.1785 at Madras). An excerpt from the page, \"..He left five gold star pagodas the value of 40 shipping sterling to any (who) can prove themselves to be the Lawfull sons of any person surnamed Troutback and born native of England. He will give his slaves both male & females their freedom at (h)is death...he went on shore naked & shipwrecked in India & same time lost his brother who was drowned. God hath prospered his endeavors and raised him the East Indies...he got his education in the year 1700 six seven & eight \"(1767-68?). He talks of all the charitable institutions he is to leave monies to (interestingly, research found that these 5 gold star pagodas were given to a surgeon for the ship \"Speke\" by the name of \"John Troutbeck\"- though similar in spelling, the family connection was spurious). Wonderful early Ship\'s Log and Records Book! My photos show just a sampling of the nice pages and entries in book. Book is in it\'s original vellum binding. Some pages are loose from binding. Journal is 13\" x 8-1/2\". Note: The journal is not always in chronological order as blank pages were filled in different places at different times, so entries go back and forth in time which at first glance can be confusing when you go through book.
CAPTAIN WILLIAM FRANKLAND was a sea captain, shipbuilder, artist (friend of John James Audubon), county magistrate, warden of the Anglican Church, and Bay of Fundy pilot. He moved from St. Andrews to Grand Manan in 1801, but then he made the move to White Head Island in 1805 as the first settler on the Island. He gained fame for loaning John James Audubon his gun so Audubon could collect bird specimens during an 1833 visit to White Head. This is a rare and wonderful piece of Grand Manan, New Brunswick history. Fine piece of maritime history as well. Starting prices for my items are only commensurate with what I pay for item and not necessarily their intrinsic value with no other reserve. This item is coming fresh out of a great West Roxbury, MA estate filled with many generations of family ephemera and items. The Newell family in W. Roxbury had relations around the Maine-Canadian border during the Early-19thC so they were probably related to the Frankland family in some way. INTERNATIONAL BUYERS will be responsible for any fees that may be due at customs- I must declare full sales value on all postal customs forms, so please offer accordingly. Massachusetts buyers pay the 6.25% sales tax. Look for my other nice Old Ephemera Items from same estate I will be listing as well. See listing for payment and shipping details.
