Up for sale is a very important antique document from c.1803concerning a treaty between Malta and Britain and a petition being made to the King of England to collect duties!! This is a translated letter to the King of England, and is addressed to him at the top. The original was most likely in Maltese. The last page of the letter bears a watermark dated 1803.

The document describes how the petitioner, Don Luciano Comitini, farmer of the Royal Duties of the Sicilian ports of Scicli, Vittoria, and Terranova, requests of the King of England (King George III) to pay past duties on goods (a large quantity of oxen, hogs, sheep, cheese, oil and wine) that had been exported from Sicily to Malta for the use of the Fleets troops and subjects of His Majesty from April 1800 to May 1801.

A problem has arisen wherein the petitioner must pay duties collected from Britain to the Court of Naples. When the petitioner tried to collect the duties from Britain, he was told by the British Commanders that a previous Treaty made with the King of the Two Sicilies exempted the British nation from these duties and that this exemption had never been revoked, so they would not pay him. In the mean time, the Court of Naples is telling the petitioner that the exemption from duties was only temporary and that they are in fact due, and HE must pay them since it was his duty to collect them. The petitioner is stuck with this large debt to the Court of Naples and is requesting of the King of England that these duties be paid. The document in conclusion advises the King of the seriousness and possible implications of the issue to relations with Sicily.
