Important Hardstone Head of a Mon Dvaravati Buddha,\"Life-size\" Museum Quality, 8/9th C.

Description: A powerful Hardstone fragmented Head of a Buddha, sensitively carved in traditional Mon Dvaravati style and period, an iconic example of early Mon artistry at its finest, masterfully rendered in realistic human form, with exacting detail and aesthetic alignment of the features. His contoured face portrays a serene contemplative expression with leaf-shaped downcast eyes incised, set beneath finely carved continuous ridged eyebrows, a prominent nose, full rimmed mouth with smiling lips, a \'Urna\' dot on the forehead, and long pendulous earlobes frame his face. The head is covered by large snail-shell hair curls, whorled, surmounted by a domed \'Ushnisha\', a cranial protuberance.xxxxx Originally chiseled as a full figured image, this fragmented portion is an exquisite example, unaltered, with no condition issues, with the exception of a partially broken right ear and minor surface abrasions. The piece reveals a well weathered and worn surface, with a naturally aged dark brownish-gray patina of molted variations, and remnants of maroon paint pigment throughout, probably painted in a later century. Being of a very dense stone, the piece is extremely heavy, with a natural quartz vein traveling through the bottom (as displayed), showing very minor surface degradation, and no evidence of erosion from weather or age.

Mon Dvaravati - A distinct and highly sophisticated culture of southeast Asia who ruled in the central Thai city of Nakhon Pathom, and were characterized as people who spoke the Mon language. The Dvaravati school of art emerged during the seventh and eighth centuries, an innovative art style that separate their artistic form from Pala( Indian) influence, an individual style distinguishable by the facial features, especially the eyes, and by the fluidness of their images carved in the round. By the tenth century, the disparate Mon-Dvaravati traditions began to come under the influence of the Khmers and central Thailand was ultimately invaded by the Khmer King Suryavarman II, in the first half of the twelfth century.
