  • About ‘Umeke Calabashes (Arts and Crafts of Hawaiiby Sir Peter Hiroa Buck)\" Wooden bowls used mostly for poi (‘umeke la‘au) are characterized by their rounded form, circular rims, rounding between the sides and the under surface, and the absence of handles and legs. There can be little doubt that wooden bowls were copied from gourd bowls. For listing heavy bowls, carrying nets (koko), were used and these were readily suspended from carrying poles (‘auamo). The bottom of the bowl was left extra thick so that the bottom weight helped to keep the bowl upright. It was easy enough to scrape a hallow in the ground of the bottom of the bowl if there was any doubt about its remaining erect. For large bowls liable to become top heavy when filled, a thick circular band of pandanus leaf was used under the bowl.\"
