One-page letter from Private Joseph McNeal (116th Ohio Infantry). In it he describes in great detail the account of the battlefield at Winchester. He is writing from bloody Run, Pennsylvania June 26th, 1863 - just days before the start of Gettysburg. (there is no cover)The letter relates details of the fighting around Stephenson\'s Depot (June 15, 1863), where superior Confederate forces, including the Stonewall Brigade, crushed the Federal forces of the Second Division, VIII Corps - General Robert H Milroy, including the 116th Ohio.McNeal\'s accounts reads:
\"Dear Mary, I have again got to the Regt at this place I was glad to meet so many of the boys alive for when I left the Battlefield at Winchester I did not think it possible for them to escape being killed or taken prisoners as the Rebles were nearly all around them pouring in a deadly fire of Shells Canister Shot and Musketry the Sight of that field on Monday Morning was awful beond anything that I can describe and therefore I will not atempt it there are only Six of our company missing that is Hiram Pitcock, Reason Risley, John Heartly, P Allen, E Newton and a little boy of Captain Hulls the Captain thinks he is killed but I rather think he is with our Doctors in Winchester the others are either captured or on their way home as they were all seen leaving the field when the fight commenced I do not know how long we may stay here we are under Marching Orders now but I Don\'t know when we shall go nor where we shall go to the enemy is advancing in full force in the direction of Pennsylvania and it is my opinion that some of heavy Battles will be fought within a few days or weeks we are here without tents blankets or cooking utensils it has been raining hard all day and from apearance will continue for Some time we have nothing to Shelter us but a few loose boards that we have put up and I can\'t find a Spot dry enough to write I will have to close for the paper is geting So wet I canot write write Soon direct to Bloo+dy Run Pa I remain as ever Yours Joseph McNeal\".Condition is good.
