This is one of the very rare historic Masonic Swords. Truly a museum, worthy piece, this golden-brass 33rd Degree Scottish Rite treasure hails from a period in close proximity to the civil war (circa late 1860\'s-1870). A sword of this caliber seldom surfaces on the market. Unlike later examples, swords from this early period were somewhat austere in design. In fact, the number \"33\" appears in only one place. Virtually inconspicuous like a quarded secret, the \"33\" number can be found engraved on the chest of the Crowned Eagle at the center of the blade. Incidentally, although a person\'s name is engraved on the back of the scabbard, there is NO NAME ON THE BLADE. The sword is in very good vintage condition with only some common minor age wear. The leather wrapped grip has routine scuffing, but everything is solid and looks great. This sword is over 150 years old! It was made by the very rare company of \"S. N. Meyer\" of Washington D.C. Relatively little is known about this firm, including the year it was founded (debated). Primarilly active after the civil war, they specialized in various military uniform items such as Admiral\'s Chapeaus, buttons and a variety of military regalia as well as items for the Police department. It is believed however, that \"S. N. Meyer\" had made swords during their earliest years, presumably during the 1860\'s. One thing is certain. They should not be confused with a later sword company bearing an almost identical name (N. S. Meyer). No relation there as far as we know. In quality, swords made by \"S. N. Meyer\" were as excellent as anything made by \"The Ames Sword Company”, “M. C. Lilley & Co”, “The Pettibone Brothers” and “Horstmann of Philadelphia”. In its scabbard, the sword measures approximately 35 ½ inches. Alone, it is around 33 ¾ inches. And the blade is about 27 ¾ inches. We should also point out that the 33rd Degree, unlike the 32nd is exclusively an honorarium. It is awarded to honour a Mason’s achievements, dedication and good works. It is not something easily attainable. Nor can one achieve this great status through the normal manner of working one’s way up the ranks of gegrees as one does the 32nd Degree. What more, swords from this unique degree were never, ever made in quantity. Even in our day. This should give you an idea of this sword\'s worth. Do not permit this historic showpiece to escape!
