INDIAN COIN SILVER TRAY; MANNER OF OOMERSI MAWJI; MADE c1880

This is a c1880 Indian coin silver card tray or small salver.

In the manner of Cutch\'s most important maker Oomersi Mawji. See Wilkinson pages 72-73.

Wilkinson notes Cutch silver was the most admired in all of India (pg 67).

The Raos of Cutch had their work displayed the the 1851 Great Exhibition in London Crystal Palace. As well as later international shows.

In classic circular form.

Elegant leaf tip twin vine rim.

All over hard carved swirling leaf and floral displays. The design taken from the intricate stone windows of the 15th century mosque at Ahmedabad (Wilkinson page 72).

The work cut in unusually high relief atop the satin surfaces. Scrolling acanthus and twisted rope repeating border work.

Never monogrammed.

This Cutch silver card tray is 6 1/2 inches and weighs 6 1/4 standard ounces.

Unsigned. We guarantee solid silver, not silver plate. Wilkinson notes that most Cutch silver is 95% pure (page 68).

In excellent condition. Rich, lustreous silver patina throughout. The brilliantly carved leaf and floral medallion retain their original crisp, sharp detail. Stands firmly on table.
