Inuit Sculpture attributed to Ralph Porter:

This charming Inuit sculpture from Gjoa Haven was purchased by my parents in 1999 from the Images of the North Gallery in San Francisco. The bill of sale, that I dug up from their files, names it \"Dancing Hunter\" and attributes this work to Ralph Porter, but I do not see any signature. There does appear to be a rectangular area on the base that I suspect once had a label. I see some scratchings but they do not appear to be deliberate. The base on one side seems to end a bit abruptly but my parents bought it this way, if the signature once existed, it is not there now.
That said, this is a totally adorable example of the Gjoa Haven Inuit art style, Porter or not. It is stone with bone teeth, eyes, spear and club. It stands 10\" tall x 7\"wide x 7\"deep and weighs 12.5 lb. Some of the photos make it appear somewhat green, but it is black stone with natural grey mottling and veins. His spear and club come out of the holes freely for packing. It is a happy piece and my Dad said he loved it because it made him smile.
