Irish Civil War Broadside Printed By Eamon Devalera Ira For Sale
Irish Civil War broadside issued by the IRA. It was printed 6 July 1922, the day after the Battle of Dublin ended as the war's first battle. Following the Irish War of Independence from England, Ireland was divided over the terms of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Supporters of the new Irish Free State under Michael Collins condoned the Treaty and approved of the Provisional Goverment, while Eamon de Valera's IRA feared England retained too much power and violently demanded a renegotiation of the terms. The broadside contains a lengthy appeal by de Valera to the people of the United States, and announces the Republican hold on Wexford, Cork, Limerick and Kerry counties. Reads in part, ''...The Irish people want a Republic; they do not want an English King as their King...to the great Republic of America, and their greetings to the descendants of those whose faithfulness to the cause of independence in some of the dark hours that succeeded 1776 won for America the proud position she now enjoys...'' Fortified by England, the Free State forces defeated the ill-equipped IRA almost a year later. Measures 9.25'' x 14.25''. Toning and creasing, else near fine.
