PETERSON PATENT12733 SHS [250] / 65

For theserious collector of antique, historically important Peterson pipes, I offer this medium sizedbarrel billiard (a bowl shape known to the Dublin pipemakers as a \"straight\") made in 1894. That date was only four years after the original Peterson systempatent, and oneyear after the Kapp Brothers store formed a new Kapp & Petersonpipe making industry. 1894 was also the year of the second Peterson patent. This pipe must have been made early in that year, because the silver mount and the briar shank bothidentify the earlier 1890 patent number.

The pipe has come down through decades in remarkably good condition. The briar surface and thesilver mount are unharmed. The Tobacco chamber isperfectly sound and will assure a reliable smoke for future decades. The inner rim edge is a wee, wee bit off center– not because the pipe was over-smoked, but because it may have been reamedawkwardly at one time. It is hardlynoticeable. And the chamber walls remain as thick as when the pipe was new.

The mouthpiece is flawless as well, but it must have been fit to the pipe some time after 1898, for it has a P-Lipbutton of a design that was not patented until \'98. I suspect the original owner of this pipe brought it into the K&P shop to be updated.

Another interesting feature of this pipe: the sterling mount was hallmarked inBirmingham, England. There are no company records to suggest Petersons were carved in England until K&P opened a factory in the late 1930s, but I have seen occasional evidence that Kapp &Peterson outsourced a small number of silver mounts fromBirmingham beginning in 1894 and as late as 1901. We knowBirmingham was a major supplier of pipe mounts for pipe manufacturers all over the United Kingdom.

A significantacquisition: as a smoking instrument, its condition and size promise a tasty experience; as a display piece it is a handsome collectible of museum quality

This Peterson pipeis one ofaverylarge number of specimens I acquired to examine, to document and tophotograph for the upcoming book on the Irishpipe making company Kapp & Peterson. Watch our listings for many more to come.
