Description

This rare pattern sword was made by Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall London, and is numbered 11912 and dates the issue to 1862; it has a gilt hilt with double folding shell guards, the front one with a crowned VR cipher, the silver wire bound grip has a crown pommel and a gilt knucklebow, the straight double edged blade is 86cm in length and etched with a crowned VR cipher, crossed Flags and scrolling acanthus, it is complete with its gilt mounted leather scabbard a bullion sword knot and a chamois leather storage bag, the sword was most likely made for John Madden and carried when he was D/ Lieutenant for Co Monaghan, but there is an old ink label attached to the sword with Lt Col ? Madden Hilton Park, so again most likely used by one of his two sons, The eldest son, John served as JP for Monaghan, Fermanagh, Cavan and Leitrim, as DL for Co. Monaghan and as High Sheriff for Monaghan (1863) and Fermanagh (1859). He was born on 26th August 1836. On 6th October 1864 he married Lady Caroline Clements (d. 4 March 1914), daughter of Rev. Hon. Francis Nathaniel Clements and sister of the 4th Earl of Leitrim. He died on 24th July 1902 leaving issue two sons, John and Gerald, and a daughter Caroline. (See Clements family). Lt Col Gerald Hugh Charles Madden, Irish Guards, was born on 26th July 1872 and served with the 16th Lancers in the South Africa War and with the 3rd King Own Hussars in WWI. He was wounded in France and died subsequently on 12th November 1915. On 6th June 1901 he married Mabel Lucy (d. 15 May 1951), daughter of Sir George Macpherson Grant, 3rd Bart, of Ballindalloch. They had two sons  Lt. Col. Brian John George Madden b. Dec 1908, served with the Black Watch in World War Two and won a DSO in 1943) and Captain Dennis Gerald Madden (b. 24 Dec 1910, m. 26 April 1941 Rosalind, daughter of Cmdr Arthur Henry de Kantzow, DSO, RN, and was killed in action on 30th April 1943  and a daughter, Eva Mabel (born 1906, m. 9 July 1936 Major Claude Ronald Wombwell of Seaforth highlanders and has a son Gerald Arthur Wombwell, born Dec 1937. Lt Col John Clements Waterhouse Madden of Hilton and Manor Waterhouse were JP and High Sheriff (1906) for Co. Monaghan and DL, JP and HS (1909) for Co. Fermanagh. He was born on 8th Feb 1870 and educated at Eton and Trinity Hall, Cambridge (MA). He was a barrister at the Inner Temple in 1895 and the King Inn in Dublin from 1897. He served with the 4th Bn Royal Irish Fusiliers. On 29th April 1908 he married Agnes Mary Tate, 3rd daughter of Sir William Henry Tate, 2nd Bart, of Highfield, Woolton, Lancs. Agnes grandfather, Sir Henry Tate 1819 1899 of Park Hill, Streatham Common, London, donated the celebrated Tate Gallery to the National Gallery.
