Continental School, Jesus Christ, Stations of the Cross, 18th / 19th Century, Large Fine Antique Oil PaintingA fine, large and imposing late 18th or early 19th century antique oil on canvas depicting the scene \'Christ Falls for the First Time\', from an original set of \'The Stations of the Cross\'.Jesus depicted having fallen with His cross whilst being urged up again and onward by a Roman soldier. An atmospheric oil, well painted in a bold palette and in a vaguely naive style typical of 18th & 19th century Flemish work, with good detailing of the figure\'s faces and expressions.Northern european, probably Dutch or Flemish, unsigned as far as is visible. In good condition with age related cracquelure to the paint surface and with no major losses. Housed in a good later wooden frame and ready to hang.Provenance: Formerly housed for many decades in a fine art collection in a chateau in South Western France and prior to that from a church in the same area. Approximate image size: 75cm x 62cm (29 1/2\'\' x 24 1/2\'\').
