There is no building of the Romanesque style in all NorthernItaly in which the solemn dignity of the sacred architecture of that epochis so united in rich and varied beauty as in the church of San Zeno.What an agreeable change is produced by the alternation of the slendercolumns and heavy divided pilasters which support the high upper wallsand the arched wood ceiling I How artistic is the view towards thechoir, placed very high, under which is an arched crypt supported by columns!What an appearance this noble space must have presented when its wallssparkled with their high-colored frescos, of which now unfortunately onlysmall portions remain. Among the other decorative works which San Zenooffers are the bronze reliefs, representing Biblical scenes, on the doorsof the principal entrance. They were probably made at the time ofthe founding of the church, in the eleventh century, and show in theirgrotesque rudeness how far inferior the Veronese plastic of those dayswas to the architectural abilities of the time. The stone reliefsof the fac;ade, which belong to the first half of the twelfth century,are much better executed; and the sculptors of these, the masters Nicolausand Wiligelmus, the latter a German, are often greatly praised for theirwonderful art in the rhyming inscriptions on the reliefs. But fargrander than all these decorations is the fagade itself, of the twelfthcentury. Its severe style, with its slender, gabled-crowned middleportion, and its sloping roofs on either side, corresponds perfectly tothe three naves of its interior. The lacework ornamentation, thedelicate friezes of the round arches, the open portico, the rose windowrichly decorated by Briolatus, finally the superb portal with its overspringingbaldacchino supported on columns,—all these denote a taste as varied asit was delicately Martin2001 Satisfaction Guaranteed Policy !
