Sterling Silver Cup and Saucer Set
Signed; Linton and Dated; 1928On offer here is this quite unique and rare, early Western Australian Sterling silver cup and saucer set, possibly a bespoke or gifted piece by this artisan silversmith.James Walter Robert Linton (1869-1947)
and James Alexander Barrow Linton (1904-1980), artists, were father and son.
James Walter Robert was born on 14 June 1869 in London, second of eleven children of Sir James Dromgole Linton and his wife Harriet Maria, (nee Allen).(Further reference to both is easily accessed from most search engines).The Perth firm of J.A.Linton is commonly associated with the production of Sterling silver teaspoon sets in the Arts and Crafts or Art Nouveau manner incorporating Australian Flora in their designs.This cup and saucer is not typically marked which leads us to believe that it was either a prototype or bespoke commissioned piece, perhaps as a christening presentation. In any case all things point to it having been hand made, and the signature upon the saucer appears to be original and to period.The workmanship and style is consistent with the Art Deco period of 1928 and of having been manufactured in Australia, thus the inescapable conclusion of attributing it to either J.W. or J.A. Linton (Snr or Jnr).Both the cup and the saucer have been hand raised as evidenced by the texture of the finish both inside and out.Perhaps a project for an assiduous collector to research further.Weight in total is 164 grams of Sterling (925/1000) silver.Condition Report
Both the cup and the saucer are in excellent condition for their age.
