***the Kearny Expedition***a Strictly One-of-a-Kind FDC ABOUT THIS COVER

The featurestampon thishand drawn and very alluring hand painted add onFDCbytheuniquely talentedJackFollowsisthePO\'s1946the Kearny Expedition ---the 100 Year Anniversary of the Conquest of New Mexico3¢ air-mailstamp,Scott # 944.

*About the cachet maker, JackFollows* :Inthe March 2009 issue of the Hobby publication, First Days ( pages 57-58 ), the veryinformed andknowledgeable writer, David Zubatsky tells us that, \"The hand-drawn and handpainted add-on cachets by Englishman, Jack Follows ( 1927-1997 ) are verypopular with collectors. They do not appear in the marketplace very often. Followswas known for his cartoonlike cachets which combined the themes of women ( sometimes nudes ), aviation, and comiccharacters . . . Each cachet was unique in design.\"

About theinspiration for this stamp : shortly after Texas won its independence from Mexico,on March 2, 1836, after the Battle at San Jacinto ( immortalized on Scott # 2204 ), they wanted the city of Santa Fe tobe their part of their western border. The problem, though, was that the SantaFe region was still owned by Mexico. Well, after Texas became our 28thstate in 1945, the Washington “big-wigs” wanted to expand the country west ofMexico, including the Santa Fe Territory, and, hence, the start of the Mexican-American War. To accomplish that mission, Brigadier General Stephen Kearny was sent to the region withapproximately 1,700 troops. He met very little resistance from the Mexicansmilitia, who were quite weary of the hopeless cause of being at war withAmerica. Because of Kearny’s successful mission major parts of the present-daystate of New Mexico, as well as sizable portion of 6 other western states, weresecured. ( The Mexican-born people whowere living in the newly-acquired territories were granted full U.S.citizenship. )

About thefeature stamp, itself :on this stamp . . . colored in varying shades of plum andlilac . . . showcases General Kearny withsome of his soldiers, after they have just finished planting the American Flag, just outside the Santa Fe border..

About the handdrawn and hand painted cachet :on this very captivating cachet, Mr. Follows introducesus to a fortunate young lady who is able to appreciate the fruits of Kearny’slabor. On a bright, sunny day, on the Santa Fe countryside, her inviting eyesseem to be saying, “Welcometo New Mexico. You’ll just love it here. I’ll be so, so happy to show youaround.” Not only that, but check out . . . um, well, if I know what’s goodfor me, I better stop this cachet description right here and now!

About thiscover\'s condition :since this cover was designed on a71 year envelope, let me weighinits overall condition.Andall things considered, this coveris in remarkable shape for an envelope from the decade of the 1930s.Firstoff, the four corners, though not needle-point sharp, are in very respectablecondition for a cover from this era. Secondly, the previous owner’s pencilednumbers notwithstanding, this envelope is exceptionally clean.Third, let me point out that the line you see on the front side’s far-right areais simply the impression of an cardboardinsert that used to be inside the envelope, and that when you hold this coverin your hands, you’ll barely notice it --- after all, my scanner’s lighting andmagnification makes the line seem more pronounced than it actually is. And finally, the cover\'s flap is neatlytucked, unsealed, inside the envelope . . .with original glue fully intact.

About theScarcity Factor : please note thatthis is strictly a one-of-a-kind piece and, thus,if you should successfully offer on it, then you . . . and you, alone . . . will be its sole owner.

All in all, the usual Followsingenuity . . .anddedicated tothe selective collector who appreciates owning anFDC that no one else owns.
