Janis Joplin befriended a group of outcasts as a teenager, one of whom had albums by Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey and Leadbelly, listening to which Joplin fell head over heels with the type of music she heard. She began singing in the local choir and expanded her listening to blues singers such as Odetta, Billie Holiday and Big Mama Thornton. This new 2017 CD features many previously unreleased performances she did for various TV shows as well as her perfoamcne at Newport in 1968.
