ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous Antique Mid 19th Century 1856 Steel Bookplate Engraving of the Famous American Scene of the draft of, “The Declaration of Independence.”, after the original painting by the famous listed artist ‘John Trumbull’ (American, 1756-1843) which took 34 years to complete the 21” x 31” painting (from 1786-1820), and is presently held by the Yale University Art Gallery. The scene actually depicts the presentation of the draft of the Declaration of Independence to Congress and is from the much smaller version of the same scene which hangs in the rotunda of the United States Capitol building in Washington, DC (12’ x 18’, placed 1826). Trumbull painted many of the figures in the picture from life and visited Independence Hall as well to depict the chamber where the Second Continental Congress met, and of the original 56 signors, 48 are present in this original depiction. The painting is sometimes incorrectly described as the ‘Signing of the Declaration of Independence’. In fact, the painting actually shows the five-man drafting committee presenting their draft of the Declaration to the Congress, an event that took place on June 28, 1776, and not the signing of the document, which took place later on July 4th. In 1817, Congress had voted to commission four large paintings from Trumbull to be hung in the United States Capitol rotunda, and Scholars across the board agree that the earlier original is the more successful image. Trumbull had great difficulty blowing these images up into large-scale works and getting the proportions of the bodies correct.” The Yale painting is the most complete depiction, and the scene is featured on the back of the $2 Bill, which eliminates two signers on the right side and four on the left. (Quote & additional info from: The price was set at $8,000 per painting, with the size and subject matter to be determined by President James Madison. A size of twelve by eighteen feet (370 cm × 550 cm) was agreed, as was the subject matter for the four paintings: “The Declaration of Independence”, “The Surrender of General Burgoyne”, “The Surrender of Lord Cornwallis”, and “Washington Resigning his Commission”. An Index ‘Key’ Legend of the image appears below for reference (though 1 person is omitted from this particular KEY). Trumbull spent the next eight years executing the commission. The title appears printed lower middle in the outer margin area. Published ‘George Virtue, London & New York.’ [George C. Virtue, 1794-1868], as appears printed lower middle under the title, and the Bookplate is from the posthumous book titled, Bartlett’s History of the United States of North America: Discovery of the Western World to the Present Day, by William Henry Bartlett & Bernard Bolingbrock Woodward, George Virtue, London and New York, 1856. ‘J. Trumbull.’, as appears printed lower left just under the image and the engraver info, ‘W. Greatbach.’ [William Greatbach, 1802-c1885], appears lower right respectively. This Engraving is printed on a nice medium-heavier weight ivory wove stock and is in VeryGood Rare+ condition for its antique age with fine detail, rich tones & crisp blacks—simply beautiful! This Engraving has been in one of our archive drawers amongst other engravings & etchings since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and would be a perfect addition to any U.S. History/Presidential collection! The size with wide margins is 6-5/8” x 9-3/4”, Image size is 4-9/16” x 6-15/16”. There is some bottom edgewear and lower left edgewear from where the Bookplate was stitched into the book and removed, and some subsequent tiny tears here & there (about 5 or so) along the edge (most are about 3/16” or less, with one slightly longer 7/16” tear) along with some tiny paper-loss chips here & there as well, and the tears are repaired from behind with archival tape for protection—all of which are completely negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. Very slight foxing specks & spots here & there on the sheet which aren’t bad at all and most can be matted out. There are a couple small moisture stain-spots evident on the lower right outer margin edge—also negligible. Extremely minimal and very slight & small crescent-creases here & there on the sheet (none really noticeable in image area), as well as a little more pronounced creasing along the bottom edge from where it attached into the book, and tiny dog-ear creasing in the outer margin corners with slight rounding too. Normal light toning of the stock from age (a little more so around the edges). Other extremely minimal edgewear with a few tiny dents & dings here & there. This beautiful antique mid 19th Century bookplate engraving has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade.
