Jugend (\"Youth\" in German) was a German art magazine that was created in the late 19th century. It featured many famous Art Nouveau artists and is the source of the term \"Jugendstil\" (\"Jugend-style\"), the German version of Art Nouveau. The magazine was founded by writer Georg Hirth. It was published from 1896 to 1940. After the death of Hirth in 1916 Franz Schoenberner became the publisher.
Jugend became the namesake of the art direction of German Art Nouveau featuring modern illustrations and ornamentation in the art nouveau style, yet other styles played a role, especially Impressionism. The journal also covered satirical and critical topics in culture. The magazine was published up until 1940 and throughout its lifetime its style and direction varied. It is in the early years of the magazine that the art nouveau style was embraced and it is this period, encompassing its first 11 years – 1896-1906 – which are featured here in PDF format on these discs. Published in short, weekly issues of approximately 15-20 pages, the magazines are provided here in “bands” with each band including 6 months of issues.
